As of January 21, 2025, the United Kingdom and the European Union have implemented electronic travel authorization systems for visa-exempt travelers.

The UK's Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system will apply to U.S. citizens starting in 2025. Although U.S. citizens do not require a visa for short-term visits to the UK, they will need to obtain an ETA before traveling.

Key points for U.S. citizens:

  • The ETA is required for entry into the UK starting January 8, 2025 for travelers from the U.S. and other visa-exempt countries.

  • It applies to those visiting for tourism, business, or short-term stays.

  • Applications can be made via the UK ETA app or the official UK government website.

  • The ETA will cost £16 and is valid for multiple trips over a period of two years or until your passport expires.

European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS):

The European Union's ETIAS is expected to be operational in late 2025. Once implemented, travelers from visa-exempt countries will need to apply for authorization before entering 30 European countries, including Schengen area nations and Cyprus. The ETIAS aims to enhance security by vetting visitors similarly to the US ESTA system. The authorization will cost €7 and be valid for up to three years or until the passport expires. Applications will be available online or via an app, with most approvals granted quickly; however, manual checks can take up to 30 days.   Source:  The Times & The Sunday Times
